Cancer Project

"A TIME TO CURE"

Our Masonic Family has a wonderful partnership with the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota which we will continue to support.  This year we will support Dr. Naomi Fujioka and her work with Lung Cancer Chemoprevention.  Dr. Fujoika's research is focused on a method of detecting potential lung cancer.  So many cancers begin in the lung and then metastasize or move to other organs.  Once this happens it makes it much more difficult to treat or surgically remove.  If these cancers could be detected and treated within the lung it would enable many more full and successful cures or remissions.  Please help us make a meaningful impact on the lives of countless friends, neighbors and thos we don't even know.

"We are impressed by Dr. Fujoika's qualifications and that this is Minnesota home-grown research, started here at the Masonic Cancer Center.  We would be pleased to assist and have the solution come from Minnesota."
  Doris Korthof, Worthy Grand Matron

"We also liked the fact that this method of treatment is a lot less expensive and a lot less invasive than other options."  Ralph Johansen, Worthy Grand Patron

Masonic Homes Project

"A TIME TO EMBRACE"

In supporting the Minnesota Masonic Homes we have chosen projects that we hope will enhance the lives of the residents of both the North Ridge and Bloomington campuses. OES projects and volunteer service have played a daily role in our mission of caring for seniors.

For the Bloomington Campus, our project is to provide new furniture for the Town Square Game Room. Construction on the Bloomington campus in 1993 included the addition of Twon Square -- The Downtown of Our Town.  Each day Town Square accommodates and entertains residents, guests, customers, business people and neighbors from the community.  It is a showpiece that amazes first-time visitors and makes residents proud that their Home is so unique.  Since the day it opened in 1993 the Game Room in Town Square has lived up to its name as the place for fun and games including bridge, cribbage and 500.  Each evening residents and their families gather in the Game Room for the TV game of all games -- "Wheel of Fortune."  In addition, the Game Room is used weekly for Bible Study and monthly for the Masonic Dan Patch Lodge Club meetings.  We estimate the cost of the items listed below at $5,000.

It's time for a make-over!  For the past 18 years the Game Room furniture has served us well.  Today, safety, comfort and appearance all need attention:

  • The existing chairs with wheels need to be replaced with firm-based chairs that will "be there" when a resident needs to sit.  (Eight chairs are needed)
  • Current tables need to be replaced with tables that better accommodate wheelchair heights.  (Two tables are needed)
  • A corner-shaped bookcase would nicely display the many games available and would compliment the existing attractive corner-shaped TV cabinet.  This would eliminate cluttered storage and make items easily accessible to residents.  (One bookcase is needed)
  • All furniture should be easy to clean/maintain and meet safety standards.

Our North Ridge Campus project is to raise money toward the purchase of electric blanket warmers.  There is nothing more soothing and comforting than a warm blanket when you are ill, have had surgery, are afraid or feeling along,  Sometimes, you are just cold!  North Ridge Masonic Home tried this out a few years ago and found it so successful and helpful with their treatment of the patients and residents, they would like to be able to provide more.  Each blanket warmer holds around 6-8 medical blankets and keeps them at a constant 160 degrees indefinitely, always ready for use.  The cost for each warmer is $330.00

Grand Chapter Jewelry Project

The Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron are sharing a pin this year.  Their pin has a cute honey bear with a beehive and 'bizzy' bees flying around him.  The cost for each is $4.00.

Scholarships

"A TIME TO LEARN"

Many of our members, their families and friends have benefited from our scholarships, and we will continue to support these programs. ESTARL is our religious scholarship program and the M. Josephine Rusham Scholarship is a program for graduating High School Seniors,  We hope that each Chapter will support both of these fine scholarships with a fund raising event or collection.

Travel Club

"A TIME TO VISIT"

This year our travel club plan is called "Bear Trackers".  This program is to encourage visiting the Chapters within your District as well as other Chapters in other Districts.  Spending a "moment in time" with other chapters and Masonic bodies can broaden our world as we know it.  We can learn from each other, support one another, increase our list of friends, and enhance relationships between chapters and chapters with other Masonic bodies.

Each chapter has received a  Bear Banner.  The object is for a chapter is to 'track down' and collect as many banners by the start of Grand Chapter on May 3, 2012.

The rules are:

  • When a minimum of three members from the same chapter visits a regular stated meeting of another OES Chapter, they can "collect" the visited Chapter's Bear Banner.  If more than one visiting Chapter have three respresentatives or a tie number of members in attendance, the members from the Chapter Home furthest away will collect the Bear Banner.
  • Banners cannot be captured during a Grand Family Visit, Grand Family Degrees, an Official Visit, Receptions or Anniversaries.  Banners may not be taken at Installation or from a chapter after installation of the new corps of officers.  The banner coincides with the chapter's year.
  • Grand Officers cannot be counted when visiting in their official capacity, (.e., acting on behalf of or as a Grand Chapter Officer).
  • Escorts may be counted from their home Chapter only.
  • No banners may be considered when a Chapter is acting as host or hostess away from their regular meeting place.

Bring your Bear Banners to the 2012 Grand Chapter Session.  There will be recognition awards for each of the six Districts and an overall award.
